Life as a River
"It's the least I could do"
Do I naturally seek the shortest - easiest way? Do I always give the 'minimum' tip? Do I let someone go in front of me at the Post Office, Bank, Stop sign or Fast Food line? Do I read 'just the required' ? Is my first thought - self or others? And you can fill in your own here:
"Do I always (or most of the time) __________________________________?"
I think it is easy to 'excuse' our doing the 'least' to busy-ness, time, money, or a whole range of other things. The bottom line is really this however....... Who is FIRST in my life?....... Me or Others? And then the words of Paul come to mind: "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourself. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others."
If I die daily, and am truly allowing God to 'order my steps', would I not more often than not 'first think of others'? Like so many days on this journey, thinking it does not always mean doing it! Yes, I can think - "let them go first" - and before I know it, I have already 'beat them to the door etc. Sure, I have a random thought, "give them a couple of dollars more of a tip", and before you know it I have left the minimum and am already driving down the road.
Today I will first think of others. I will obey the Holy Spirit as He 'shoots me thoughts' -
give them more, stop and pray for them, let them go first (boy - that one is hard),
read more, pray longer, be quiet and DO MORE.
And at the end of each day
I will look back and write down 'the more's' of that day,
thanking Him for allowing me to be a river.
