“Every good and perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,
who does not change like shifting shadows”.
The Way Forward" from my friend a fellow 'River'
Read that again - EVERY gift is from God…. As my friend Henry Blackaby would say… “How much is included in every?” Yes, every good and perfect gift comes from God. Even the very breath we breathe comes from God. How presumptuous of us to ‘take the credit’ for anything - but so often we do.
Are you a River? As my Uncle Duane Maxey would say, “Rivers make Channels, Channels don’t make Rivers - Think about that! How did you become a river? It is only by God - pouring His love and good and perfect gifts into and through me - a channel - that I have ‘become’ His River.
Noting that God is the author of all “Good and Perfect Gifts” we need to be mindful of three areas that will result in us becoming a Reservoirs not Rivers.
- Glorying in ourselves. Who would glorify himself in what is from above? We are careful not to take credit for another persons work, how much more should we not ‘take credit’ (thinking it is of our doing) for what has come from God? All the good our hand accomplishes is heaven’s ‘good and perfect’ gift - It is God’s work, not ours.
- Taking pride in what we have or have done. Ungodly and weak spirits feed their evil desires with their enjoyments & pleasures. We take pride in what we have done, and especially in what ‘we have’. We even take pleasure in “what we have done for God.” But in so doing, we discredit the very giver of every good and perfect gift. Again, it is from God, not us.
- Envying those who have received most. Our eye is evil - God's hand is good. Envy is a rebellion against God Himself and the liberty and pleasure that comes from His “Good and Perfect Gifts”. God gives and blesses as He wills, not as we will. Out duty is to be content and to ask for His grace and His wisdom to make use of what we have received. As Paul says, I have had nothing and I have had plenty. But I have learned that in all to be content.
My Prayer today:
Lord, I am thankful today that all I am is from you. I thank you for every good and perfect gift. Help me to remember that I am to be the river through which you will flow to others. And especially at this time of year, may the truth of "God so loved the world that He GAVE" - be lived out through this 'grateful River'. Amen.
